ABSTRACT
The plane stress assumption – one of the most frequently used key assumptions in the analysis of the mechanical behavior of materials – is the topic of this chapter. The three-dimensional stress–strain behavior of Chapter 5 is simplified to account for the plane stress assumption, including thermal expansion effects. The consequences of these simplifications are emphasized with numerical examples.
