ABSTRACT

Correlation assesses the strength of an association between two variables and linear regression allows us to use one variable to predict another variable.

This Chapter starts by introducing the subject of correlation, including linear relationships between variables and how scatter plots and correlation coefficients are used to assess the strength of these. Example data and computer outputs illustrate their use and interpretation.

Three different types of correlation coefficient are discussed, explaining the situations in which they should be used, and the criteria required in order for them to be valid.

Linear regression is then explained using an example computer output for the previously used data, which is then discussed and interpreted.
