ABSTRACT

Routers in a network need routing protocols to maintain the Routing Tables they use to route traffic to network destinations. The Routing Tables must be maintained such that they always contain the most current network reachability information. How this is done, depends on the type of routing protocol used (distance-vector, link-state, or path-vector), and the specific mechanisms supported within the particular routing protocol (RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP).
