ABSTRACT

Mechanical locks and latches for securing openings have worked well for many years, but many facilities with a large staff want more security with less key management. Electrically powering door hardware, or anything else covered in this book, is a matter of understanding what amount and direction of electrical flow is required. The final element for a security manager to understand about magnetic door locks is safety. The electromagnetic lock is the simplest of the electric locks. Like the electromagnetic lock the Facility Manager has to decide how they want the door to perform if power for the electric strike fails. Like magnetic locks, power for the electric strike can be either 12-volt or 24-volt direct current or 120-volt alternating current depending upon the design by the manufacturer. The electric strike has a mechanical component and an electrical component and is likely to require more maintenance than the electromagnetic lock.
