ABSTRACT

Today, filtration can play a larger role if the peoples are to clean up our indoor air, and deserves notice. New high-quality filters and air-cleaning devices are available from dozens of manufacturers. If the right filter is selected and the filtration system is properly maintained, significant IAQ benefits and energy cost savings can result. Newer standards attempt to address many areas the older standards did not, including in this case establishment of a minimum filtration efficiency level, filtration as a means of source control, filtration maintenance practices, filtration efficiencies based on particle size, and recommended fractional-size efficiencies. A key element of filtration, for example, that is tied to efficiency is the amount of energy required to push air through the filter. More-efficient filters tend to hinder airflow, which can raise static pressure, adding to energy costs as well as equipment wear-and-tear.
