ABSTRACT

The term “air handling unit” is a generalization, used to describe everything from single zone packaged rooftop units and fan coils to full blown VAV air handlers. This chapter covers the various air handler applications, specifically, single zone systems, reheat systems, and VAV systems. The construction of built up air handlers typically consists of multiple “modules” all fitted together in such a manner as to physically and functionally fit the given application. An air handler may be equipped with an exhaust/return fan, which is positioned to assist the air to get from the space served back to the unit. The heating section of an air handler can take the form of a steam, hot water, or electric heating coil. Gas-fired furnaces or heating modules are available, depending upon the application, and also on the manufacturer of the air handler.
