ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the types of unitary equipment that are strictly built for heating purposes. Unit heaters are the classic means of providing heat in unfinished spaces, such as warehouses, electrical rooms, and mechanical equipment rooms. Electric unit heaters generate heat in much the same way as electric duct heaters: via electric resistance heating elements. Hot water unit heaters consist minimally of a fan and a hot water coil. Steam unit heaters operate in the same manner as hot water unit heaters. Cabinet unit heaters are packaged fan driven heaters that are installed in finished spaces, attempting to blend in with their surroundings. Electric cabinet unit heaters operate identically to electric unit heaters, if controlled by a remote thermostat. Electric baseboard heating is typically applied in buildings that don’t have a source for hot water or steam, simply by design.
