ABSTRACT

The nature of the facility is a major factor in disaster planning. Contingency planning elements include the initial emergency response, recovery, resumption, implementation, testing and revision. The National Institute of Standards and Technology, has developed contingency planning guidelines for information systems. Website contingency planning involves such factors as: documentation, programming, security controls, load balancing, implementation coordination and response procedures. Contingency planning must be coordinated with these controls to insure that security is not compromised during system recovery. Planning considerations include defining the duties of personnel and procedures for each position. Planning considerations in protecting property include establishing procedures for fires, material spills, shutting down equipment and moving equipment to a safe location. Traditional methods of protecting computer data transfer a copy of the data from a hard disk to removable media. The nature of the facility is a major factor in disaster planning. An electrical system outage can have catastrophic effects in a hospital.
