Violence and other injuries by persons or animals accounted for 780 fatalities, or about 17 percent of the fatal injuries in the workplace in 2011. During the 2005–2009 period, males had a higher rate of workplace violence than females. In terms of race, whites had a higher rate of workplace violence than blacks. There was no statistically significant difference between whites and Native Americans in the rate of workplace violence. Hispanics were similar to blacks and Asians in their rates of workplace violence. A specific category of violent crime, workplace violence is more than a physical attack. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, defines workplace violence as “any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health defines workplace violence as “violent acts directed towards persons at work or on duty.”.
