ABSTRACT

Workplace violence is now recognized as a specific category of violent crime that calls for distinct responses from employers, law enforcement, and the community. Job related mass murders by disgruntled employees are mediaintensive events. The majority of incidents that employees/managers have to deal with on a daily basis are lesser cases of assaults, domestic violence, stalking, threats, harassment, and physical and/or emotional abuse that do not make the headlines. Harassment is a form of workplace violence and becomes illegal when it violates the Civil Rights Act. Harassment is the unwelcome conduct that is based on race, color, religion, gender, pregnancy, national origin, age, disability or genetic information. Prevention is the best tool to eliminate harassment in the workplace. Employers are encouraged to take appropriate steps to prevent and correct unlawful harassment. Employees are encouraged to inform the harasser directly that the conduct is unwelcome and must stop.
