ABSTRACT

To maximize energy savings in existing facilities, it is best to adopt a comprehensive energy plan that incorporates four initiatives: energy saving technology, proper maintenance, metering, and energy awareness. In the retrocommissioning part of the study, energy savings averaged 41% of the total energy usage decreased by 17% over two years. An effective energy awareness program touches all parts of an organization. A great example of effective awareness training is the Weirton Steel Corp. Beginning in 1998, they undertook a series of training initiatives, including safety awareness training, and certifying all plant supervisors in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's General Industry Standards. The failure to involve and enlist the cooperation of the organization will negatively affect other seemingly unrelated energy management initiatives. A comprehensive energy management program includes: Technology deployment, Proper commissioning, operation, and maintenance practices, Continual monitoring of energy use and Energy awareness—behavioral and non-technical approaches.
