ABSTRACT

The road to project management expertise is a long and winding one, with many different spurs and off-shoots. Traversing it is never a smooth and unencumbered ride. Organizations don’t always have standard practices for managing projects, especially those that are not project based. Often, in addition to performing their everyday duties, when managers are called upon to don the hat and mantle of a project manager, they find themselves woefully unprepared to take on the challenge. The key to a project’s success is its launch from a detailed and well-thought out project management plan. Such plans are formal documents that spell out how a project is to be implemented, executed, monitored and controlled. Hold a project kick-off meeting with everyone having a stake in the project, to acquire an understanding of their expectations, clarify the project’s goals and objectives and communicate tasks and assignments to team members.
