ABSTRACT

A variety of communication methods can be used to deliver project information to collect data, track issues, assign tasks, plan work, report status, document performance, distribute information, resolve conflicts and record data. Communications can be one-way or two-way. In a project, information flow is referred to as communication. Communication channels refer to the way this information flows within the project and between the project’s principals. Breakdowns in project communications lead to an inefficient flow of information. Considerable thought should be given by project managers and their teams as to how communications will be managed throughout the course of a project. Communications plans are created during the planning phase, then executed and monitored over the course of a project’s implementation. It is generally accepted that there are three categories of communication that need to be tracked in a project communication plan; i.e., meetings, reports and records.
