ABSTRACT

Natural gas storage plays a vital role in maintaining the reliability of supply needed to meet the demands of customers. However, because such a low proportion of natural gas deposits actually seep to the surface, the exploration process became very inefficient and difficult. In addition to compressing natural gas to reduce its volume and push it through the pipe, metering stations are placed periodically along interstate natural gas pipelines. Underground salt formations offer another option for natural gas storage. An important point that needs to be understood is how natural gas flows—the process of getting natural gas from where it originates to where it is used. Technology has allowed an increase in the success rate of locating natural gas reservoirs. Geologists and geophysicists use state-of-the-art technology to gather data that can later be interpreted and used to make educated guesses as to where natural gas deposits exist.
