Stanford has recently completed a group retrofit of 73 heating ventilation and air conditioning motors with new energy-efficient models. This chapter describes the project’s implementation through each of the following phases: initial survey, motor efficiency testing, payback analysis, and installation. It includes a detailed procedures for testing motors. The chapter proposes a simplified method that eliminates much of the required testing. Initial trials indicate that the accuracy of the simplified method compares quite favorably to the complete testing procedure. It is important for the energy manager to keep careful documentation during each phase of the project. The ability to select the installations with the best payback is the key to the whole program. Once all of the test data were compiled and the load factor and efficiency calculated, a detailed payback analysis was made. The 73 energy-efficient motors under the Stanford project were installed by two technicians over a period of four months. Total man-hour time was approximately 600 hours.
