ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the balance between moneymaking and the law on one hand, and energy and environment on the other. It also looks at the economics and finances of the different power generating products, technologies, and processes, as well as the economic effect these have on the environment and human health and well being. Energy generation and use is a huge and growing business, accompanied by a lot of pollution, which is creating another huge business in its wake—that of environmental protection. Renewable projects also rely heavily on project finance, which is not the traditional business model used by venture capital firms. Project financing relies on the complex management of project risks, mitigation strategies, legal and commercial structuring, significant debt financing, and coordination with a variety of stakeholders, including contractors, large industrial partners and potential customers.
