ABSTRACT

The Home Energy Rating Service (HERS) rating is recognized in many states as an evaluation of energy code compliance. This chapter covers topics that are important to conducting Residential Energy Services Network HERS ratings on new homes or new additions to existing homes. Most home construction drawings are drawn to a 1/4-inch per foot scale. This means that every 1/4-inch on the drawing represents 1 foot of the actual size of the home. The elevation drawings or side views should show the rough location of windows and doors on that side of the home, as well as all their dimensions. Building plans have a variety of different views of the building as drawings. In reviewing the plans for evaluation before the building is built, at least look at the elevation plans and floor plans. Builders can benefit from an evaluation of the quality of the work that subcontractors in the various trades have provided in building the home.
