ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss some additional features around thematic maps. Specifically, we address some of the problems we confront when we are trying to use choropleth maps, as well as some alternatives to point based maps. These are binning techniques, such as hexagonal and rectangular grids. We also introduce alternative visualisations for polygon-level data, specifically cartograms and hexograms. We demonstrate an example of mapping two variables on one map simultaneously using a bivariate thematic map. Finally we will also briefly introduce the modifiable area unit problem.
