ABSTRACT

This chapter is about diversity in real estate – land and buildings, together with the airspace above the ground and the ground beneath the earth’s surface. It considers the meaning of diversity and how and why real estate is a diverse sector. The chapter then explains some common uses of real estate – housing and offices, for example – and considers some, perhaps, less familiar purposes.

Reference should also be made to Chapter 2 when reading this chapter, to help build a picture of the role, variety, scale, and importance of real estate. Other helpful ways of gaining an understanding of the diversity of real estate are to observe local environments, to look at planning use classes and at the range of RICS pathways, which reflect the breadth of the sector. There are links to further resources at the end of this chapter.
