ABSTRACT

Following on from the last chapter on real estate as an investment and an asset, this chapter now considers a variety of reasons for holding real estate as a resource.

A discussion on the need for real estate as a core part of the business of the owner/occupier will be provided together with some supporting examples. Situations where real estate may change from asset to resource; or resource to asset; or fulfil both functions, will also be explored.

A range of organisations that hold real estate as a resource will be considered together with an overview of how it is used.

Finally, various ways of assessing, and improving, the performance of corporate real estate are covered.
