ABSTRACT

The social and economic impacts of the epidemics caused by these pathogens have been profound in countries in which shrimp farming constitutes a significant industry. One of the major difficulties in making use of probiotics on disease control is the wide range of environmental condition where shrimp is grown. In addition to this, number of tools like use of tolerines, probiotics, immunostimulants, quorum sensing modulators, shrimp vaccines, RNA interference (RNAi) and other disease prevention methods are now being developed. The precise mechanisms underlying non-self-recognition represent the basis to prevent and control infections as well as to stimulate animal resistance. The haemolymph factors associated with defence in crustaceans include lectins, agglutinins, precipitins, bactericidins, lysins and bacteriostatic substances and induction of such haemolymph factors in shrimps has been reported in literature. Number of workers have studied the RNA interference technique to prevent or control viral diseases in shrimp.
