ABSTRACT

Now realising the importance of genomic research in shrimp culture, attempts are being made in several laboratories on developing molecular genetic resources including genetic maps, expressed sequence tags, gene sequences, and few DNA libraries for shrimps. Over the last decade there is a considerable growth of genomics in the shrimps, and the new tools of molecular biology are contributing to the growth in field at a rapid pace. Though genomic sequencing programmes for several agricultural species have now been either completed or are in progress, genomic information on the shrimp is still limited and fragmented. Efforts have been made here to summarise the current state of the shrimp genomics in the following prime areas of research. Proteomics is a rapidly emerging set of key technologies that are being used to identify proteins and map their interactions in a cellular context.
