ABSTRACT

The successful application of the eyestalk ablation technique to induce maturation and spawning. Now the eyestalk ablation technique is being practiced commercially for inducement of maturation and spawning of shrimps. A few instances of natural maturation and spawning of unablated and captive. Shoji reported that the shortest period from ablation to the onset of maturation is 22 days and first spawning occur after 25 days in wild shrimps colleted from the open sea. The fact that juveniles of these species live in brackish waters and are usually migrate to the sea for spawning purposes suggests that salinity is one of the important factors that influence the maturation process. The use of exogenous hormones to induce the gonadal maturation and spawning is not well established. The lack of full maturation and spawning may be due to the limited time and/ or inappropriate dosage. Optimal progesterone doses and injection sequences to induce ovarian maturation and spawning may vary from species to species.
