ABSTRACT

Dibucaine is a local anesthetic of the aminoalkylamide type now generally used for surface anesthesia. Several cases of systemic contact dermatitis from dibucaine in antihemorrhoidal ointments containing dibucaine have been reported, mostly in the form of the baboon syndrome and rarely as a maculopapular eruption or acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis. Several cases of systemic contact dermatitis from dibucaine have been reported, mostly in the form of the baboon syndrome, and as a maculopapular eruption and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis in one patient each. The first patient with systemic contact dermatitis due to dibucaine was reported in 1995 from Portugal. However, patch tests to the ointment, dibucaine and the caine mix, were negative. It was concluded that the patient had both photocontact allergy and contact allergy to dibucaine.
