ABSTRACT

Aluminum acetate is a topical astringent that is used as an antiseptic agent. It reduces inflammation, itching, and stinging of the infected skin and is said to promote healing. The use of aluminum acetate ear drops was discontinued and the otitis externa has resolved, though chronic otitis media continues with variable severity. The boy’s mother recollected that when aged 4 year, he had suffered a severe reaction with localized erythema and swelling accompanied by systemic upset to a diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis triple booster vaccination. 5% aluminum acetate drops were effective in drying up the secretions, but otitis externa developed and the persisted.
