ABSTRACT

In the period 2000 to 2005, in the USA, 1172 patients suspected of corticosteroid allergy were patch tested with fluocinolone acetonide 1% alc. and there were 12 (1.0%) positive reactions, of which 11 (92%) were considered to be relevant. From January 1990 to June 2008, in Leuven, Belgium, 315 patients were diagnosed with contact allergy to/allergic contact dermatitis from corticosteroids (CSs) from routine patch testing with a baseline series including tixocortol pivalate, budesonide, hydrocortisone butyrate and prednisone caproate, patch testing with patients’ own CS preparations, and testing those with proven contact allergy to a corticosteroid or strongly suspected of CS allergy later with a series of 66 CSs, including two sex hormones. In a report on contact allergy to nystatin, the patient had a negative reaction to fluocinolone, present in the combination product containing nystatin. However, the authors stated that they had observed a case of contact allergy to fluocinolone acetonide a few years previously.
