ABSTRACT

Ambroxol is an aromatic amine and a metabolite of bromhexine that stimulates mucociliary action and clears the air passages in the respiratory tract. As a secretolytic agent it is indicated for treatment of bronchopulmonary diseases with abnormal or excessive mucus secretion and transport. It allows the mucus to be more easily cleared and eases a patient’s breathing. A 60-year-old woman developed itchy erythema and vesicles around the nose, upper lip and cheeks. Positive reactions were seen to the commercial ambroxol solution and ambroxol at all concentrations, but to the related bromhexine. Concurrently with the positive patch tests to ambroxol, the patient experienced a focal flare of perinasal eczema.
