ABSTRACT

This chapter provides monographs of fluticasone propionate which have caused contact allergy/allergic contact dermatitis. The monographs present: identification section; contact allergy (general population, patients with dermatitis, case reports and case series); cross-reactions; patch test sensitization; photocontact allergy; and immediate contact reactions (contact urticaria). The identification section presents IUPAC names, synonyms, CAS and EC numbers, structural and chemical formulas, Merck Index monographs, and advises on patch testing. In the United Kingdom, in the period 1994-1995, 1312 patients were routinely tested with fluticasone propionate 1% in acetone. There were 67 steroid-allergic patients, but none reacted to fluticasone propionate. It was concluded that this corticosteroid has a low risk of sensitization. It may, however, cross-react in patients with multiple corticosteroid sensitivities. The chapter also covers an extensive amount of information to benefit dermatologists, allergists, and all others interested in drug allergy.
