ABSTRACT

Sensitization usually occurred after a prolonged period of contact with the incriminated eye drops. When tested later with its ingredients, the patient showed positive patch tests to aminocaproic acid 1% and 2% water, which functions as a buffer in the eye solution. Two more case report of contact allergy to aminocaproic acid from its presence in eye drops, adequate data of which are available to the author, can be found in ref. 11. Japanese authors mention in the table 'Previous reports of allergic contact dermatitis from epsilon-aminocaproic acid' in their publication 7 patients sensitized to aminocaproic acid from its presence in one particular brand of eye drops, which is widely used in Japan for cataracts. Polymerized aminocaproic acid is used in nylon, which has caused a case of non-pharmaceutical sensitization to ACA. The patient, who developed scaly erythema on her trunk from wearing nylon body stocking, reacted to 3% and 6% aminocaproic acid pet.
