ABSTRACT

Methylprednisolone aceponate is the aceponate (acetate propionate) ester of the synthetic glucocorticoid methylprednisolone. This chapter provides monographs of methylprednisolone aceponate which have caused contact allergy/allergic contact dermatitis. The monographs present: identification section; contact allergy (general population, patients with dermatitis, case reports and case series); cross-reactions; patch test sensitization; photocontact allergy; and immediate contact reactions (contact urticaria). The identification section presents IUPAC names, synonyms, CAS and EC numbers, structural and chemical formulas, Merck Index monographs, and advises on patch testing. In the period 2001-2010, in Australia, 4353 patients were patch tested with a commercial ointment containing 0.1% methylprednisolone aceponate and there were 52 (1.2%) positive reactions, of which 12 (23%) were considered to be relevant. The chapter also covers an extensive amount of information to benefit dermatologists, allergists, and all others interested in drug allergy.
