ABSTRACT

Since then, contact allergy to neomycin has been the subject of a vast number of publications. Because of this, as neomycin sensitivity is generally well known and as data on contact allergy to/allergic contact dermatitis from neomycin are often 'hidden' in scientific articles. Estimates of the 10-year prevalence of contact allergy to neomycin in the general population of Denmark based on the CE-DUR method ranged from 0.26% to 0.35%. As neomycin is present in most, if all, baseline/routine/screening/standard series tested worldwide, data on testing this aminoglycoside antibiotic in consecutive patients is abundant. Despite the poor penetration of neomycin in normal skin, in one patient patch testing induced a flare-up of previous sites of allergic contact dermatitis from neomycin. Day 5 patch testing results showed positive reactions to the antibacterial ointment, the anesthetic cream, neomycin, pramoxine, and bacitracin.
