ABSTRACT

This chapter provides monographs of pecilocin which have caused contact allergy/allergic contact dermatitis. The monographs present: identification section and contact allergy (general population, patients with dermatitis, case reports and case series). The identification section presents IUPAC names, synonyms, CAS and EC numbers, structural and chemical formulas, Merck Index monographs, and advises on patch testing. In 1975, in one practice in Denmark, there were 44 patients with a history of treatment with pecilocin (Variotin). These patients were patch tested with pecilocin, and seven were found to be allergic to this drug. In three of them the skin disease had been caused or exacerbated by pecilocin. The chapter also covers an extensive amount of information to benefit dermatologists, allergists, and all others interested in drug allergy.
