ABSTRACT

Bimatoprost is a synthetic prostamide and structural prostaglandin analog with ocular hypotensive activity. It mimics the effects of the endogenous prostamides and reduces intraocular pressure by increasing outflow of aqueous humor through both the pressure-sensitive outflow pathway, and the pressure-insensiti- ve outflow pathway. Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution is used as an antihypertensive agent for controlling the progression of open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. A 52-year-old woman, while using 0.03% bimatoprost for open angle glaucoma, developed conjunctival hyperemia, foreign body sensation, blepharitis and ocular pruritis, as well as increased pigmentation of the periocular skin. A patch test with bimatoprost at a concentration of 0.003% was ‘positive’ at D2, causing pigmentation and local itching.
