ABSTRACT

In guinea pigs, croconazole was found to be a strong sensitizer. Based on the limited use of croconazole and the short period from first use to sensitization, it was concluded that croconazole has a stronger sensitizing ability than other imidazoles. From Japan, 6 cases of allergic contact dermatitis from croconazole were reported, 3 years after its introduction in 1986. Patch testing revealed positive reactions only to croconazole cream and croconazole. A 58-year-old man presented with weeping erosions in the genital and inguinal area, where a tinea cruris had been treated with various topical imidazoles including croconazole cream. A patient sensitized to clotrimazole very likely cross-reacted to croconazole and itraconazole. A 74-year-old man presented with a 3-month history of interdigital mycosis of both feet. Treatment included the topical imidazole antifungals clotrimazole, bifonazole and croconazole.
