ABSTRACT

Crotamiton is also used as solubilizer and may be included in topical NSAIDs, antimycotics, corticosteroids. At St. John's Hospital, London, in the period 1971 to 1976, 5 women and one man were thought to have been sensitized by an ointment containing 10% crotamiton, which they had used for treatment of various forms of dermatitis. A 65-year-old man developed an extremely pruritic and diffusely spreading allergic contact dermatitis from crotamiton, the NSAID felbinac and the excipient diisopropanolamine in a compress. When tested later with all ingredients, the patient reacted positively to crotamiton 5% pet. Other case reports of contact allergy to/allergic contact dermatitis from crotamiton, adequate data of which are not available to the author, can be found in refs. Crotamiton and lidocaine have butanoyl toluidine in common in their chemical structure, suggesting the possibility of cross-sensitization.
