ABSTRACT

Acexamic acid is a drug used as a cicatrization helper. Its salt zinc acexamate has been employed in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers and in the prevention of gastric ulcer induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in topical formulations, it has been used as a ‘cicatrization helper’. A 66-year-old woman had been applying an ointment containing acexamic acid and neomycin for several months to a leg ulcer until complete healing. Meanwhile, she developed erythematous, itching papules, that spread to the trunk and arms, and edema of the legs. Cutaneous adverse drug reactions from systemic administration of zinc acexamate caused by type IV hypersensitivity, including a generalized maculopapular eruption with urticarial characteristics, are planned to be discussed in Volume IV of the Monographs in Contact Allergy series on Systemic drugs.
