ABSTRACT

Increasing evidence revealing the therapeutic potential of nutraceuticals has resulted in the popularity of the functional foods and driven the consumption of such foods. Although millets have been used for centuries in different parts of the world, this latest influx of information has made them emerge as superfoods, especially for weight reduction. The benefits derived from millets are not limited to their unsaturated fatty acids, dietary fibre, and low glycaemic index. Several classes of phytochemicals, peptides, and enzymes have been derived from millets which have been shown to possess many health benefits. Studies have showed that millet derivatives function not just in prevention but also in the treatment of diseases. These are beneficial in diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, microbial infections, cancer cell proliferation, etc., to name a few. In a nutshell, we can say that the consumption of millets can be beneficial in the maintenance of overall health.
