ABSTRACT

The international community has recently held a series of conferences and drafted documents on the importance of conservation, while emphasising the different policies pursued in different cultures, in particular in the West and the East. The cultural approach in the Western world is fairly homogeneous.

The chapter explores and compares the approaches adopted by various European countries. Lastly, it focuses on the World Monuments Watch project, which will hopefully become standard practice throughout Europe for a conservation policy based on planned maintenance.
