ABSTRACT

One of the most involved portions of code compliance is navigating the permitting process. Federal, state, and local agencies have permits to control different aspects of regulation. It is imperative to know which permits are required for a facility to ensure the health and safety of humans and the environment. Permitting violations can also incur heavy penalties, so it is important to understand the rules surrounding permitting for each agency and type of regulated source. Deviation from the permitted conditions must be identified and corrective actions must be taken within this stipulated time frame. Timely notification to the agency must also be made. It is important to remember that notifications to the respective agency of the upset process conditions do not trigger violations, non-notification does.

While the permitting process varies based on the type of permit and the agency issuing it, there are a few key components to consider during any permitting process. It is important to identify the sources in the facility that could potentially require a permit and research what specific permit those sources need. An application will be submitted, which can include several components like calculations or drawings, and it will almost always include a description of the project. Once permits are granted, it is important to follow all regulations required under a permit in order to remain in compliance. Monitoring and recordkeeping of the permitted process are commonly used to ensure permittees are staying in compliance.

Although the permitting process can seem difficult, it is crucial to the safety of humans and the well-being of the environment. It ensures that all facilities are in compliance with the policies put in place to protect us.
