ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to provide a concise summary of key concepts. It discusses the role of management software for improving building performance. Management activities belong to three levels: strategic, tactical and operational. Strategic planning requires data and a user-friendly interface for visualizing and analysing data. Resource management is similar to asset management. Resources include people, space, money, and equipment. Smart maintenance management software helps in reduction in labor costs, ensures increased equipment availability due to better planning, increased equipment reliability through identification of repetitive faults, and optimal stocks of spares and materials. Role-based security privileges could be assigned in the FMS. Automation has tremendous potential to improve the performance of building systems. In addition to improving energy efficiency, comfort, convenience, safety, and security of buildings could be improved through automation.
