ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the design of chemical reactors. It covers the continuous stirring-tank reactor, plug flow reactors, and the packed bed reactor for the isothermal or isolated operating mode. For the required conversion of the limit reactant, the reactor's volume is calculated manually with the knowledge of the partial conversion of the specified component or vice versa by knowing the size and computing the fractional conversion of the limit reactant. Five software packages verify the manual results: UniSim/Hysys, PRO/II, Aspen Plus, SuperPro Designer, and Aveva Process Simulation. The comparison of manually calculated results is, in most cases, in good agreement with the predictions of the software packages.
