ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a brief introduction followed by examples illustrating a distillation column's detailed design to separate two or several components in a packed bed or tray column. Classification provides methods for calculating the minimum reflux ratio, the actual and minimum number of trays, column height, and diameter. The manually calculated results were verified using commercial software packages. Five packages of programs to affirm and support manual design. The five software packages are UniSim/Hysys, PRO/II, Aspen Plus, SuperPro Designer, and Aveva Process Simulation. The comparison of the manually calculated results is, in most cases, in good agreement with the program's predictions.
