ABSTRACT

Using neuroscience and behavioral research, we explore biases and their impacts on our decision-making processes. Insights on one’s own unconscious are gained through the Harvard Implicit Association Test (IAT) in conjunction with the IAT Reflection. Stereotyping and microaggressions negatively impact a culture of belonging. Building one’s own cultural competency is a key tool in addressing bias to drive JEDI transformation. Taking the time to learn about other people’s experiences, stories, and history begins the process of gaining perspective. Use inclusive language and stop using a term if it is offensive to someone. Practice speaking up and acting on your values using a model such as Giving Voice to Values. Awareness is the first step in minimizing the impact of bias in decision-making, policy development, and system creation.
