ABSTRACT

This chapter sets the stage for the further chapters by providing the definition of augmented reality (AR) and a brief history of the development of this technology. It introduces the reader to the core components of AR – processor, displays, and sensors. It also deals with the computer vision methods that can be employed in AR. We have discussed the various software tools that are available to assist the reader in developing AR applications. AR is usually seen as a preferred technology for gaming and entertainment; in the last section, we have put light on how AR can provide support and assistance to specially abled individuals.
