ABSTRACT

The family Geraniaceae consists of 4 genera and 830 species of herbs or shrubs. The leaves are simple, alternate or opposite, and stipulate. The inflorescences are cymes of actinomorphic or zygomorphic flowers. The calyx includes 5 sepals. The corolla comprises 5 petals. The androecium is made of 5–10 stamens. The gynoecium consists of 5 carpels fused into a 5-locular ovary, each locule sheltering 1–2 pendulous ovules. The fruits are schizocarps of 5 awned mericarps, each mericarp containing a single seed. Members of the family Geraniaceae produce hydrolysable tannins and essential oils.
