ABSTRACT

Being a junior doctor can be daunting, tiring, draining, rewarding and challenging. The learning curve is steep, and stress is an ever-present companion. Doctors often move from one speciality to another and, when they first enter a new post, they have no experience at all in managing the specialist patients they see. They are literally thrown in at the deep end and expected to swim with very little aid. Lack of experience, however, does not mean lack of responsibility, and often, they are at the coalface of dealing with patients and in the line of fire of clinical errors. The same issues apply for students in all our health care fields and settings.
