ABSTRACT

In the carbon family, diamond stands out as the supreme ruler; it has the most extreme properties of all materials. With the increasing commercial development underway, the arrival of the ultimate diamond age in the future with the climax of human civilization seems inevitable. The compromise of loose and tight structures lies exactly at the kissing number of 4, and hence, it manifests well in the flexibility of tetrahedral bonding of diamond. Thus, being located at the crown throne of the periodic table, it is not accidental that diamond is the miracle material with so many extreme properties that pale all other materials. It would appear that industrial diamond sales would continue to grow almost without limit due to the constantly new discoveries of novel diamond applications, provided that the price of diamond materials will continue to slide because of the improvements of manufacturing efficiency.
