ABSTRACT

Plants and plant extracts form the basis of affordable and easily accessible sources of treatment for over three-quarters of the world’s population. Herbal medicine (HM) or phytomedicine refers to herbs, herbal materials, herbal preparations, and finished herbal products with therapeutic and healing properties. Terminalia species are distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Australia, Africa and America. The Asian Terminalias covering many of the useful species with extensive documentation of their therapeutic effects occur across Malaysia, Indonesia, South Asia, West Asia and the Middle East. Genus Terminalia is known to be a rich source of secondary metabolites, mainly polyphenols and triterpenoids. Polyphenols and triterpenoids are the most common class of compounds in the Terminalia genus.
