ABSTRACT

Flavonoids are an important group of phenolic compounds widely distributed in Terminalia species. Ellagic acid derivatives are hydrolyzable tannins since they are esters of hexahydroxydiphenic acid. PAs are polymers of catechin and their ent-isomer. LC-QTOF-MS gives separation of the components, accurate mass and MS/MS data enabling identification and characterization of the components. This chapter identifies and characterizes the phytocomponents of six species of Terminalia: T. arjuna, T. bellirica, T. catappa, T. chebula, T. elliptica and T. paniculata available in India. It identifies a large number of compounds including acids, flavonoids, gallic and ellagic acid derivatives and proanthocyanidins by comparison with reference compounds, interpretation of MS/MS fragmentation patterns or by comparison with literature data.
