ABSTRACT

A variety of foodstuffs are flavored with elemi oil and in Europe it is used in spices and seasonings. In the US, elemi oil is also used in fragrances. Elemi oil is a colorless to pale yellow clear mobile liquid which has a terpenic, woody, somewhat spicy and balsamic odor. In elemi oils from various origins, over 45 chemicals have been identified. A full literature review of the qualitative and quantitative composition of commercial and non-commercial elemi oils of various origins and with data from the ISO standard has been published in 2016. Contact allergy to and possible allergic contact dermatitis from elemi oil have been reported in one publication only. An aromatherapist had occupational contact dermatitis with allergies to multiple essential oils used at work, including elemi oil.
